This position provides interpretation for Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and their families. This position acts as a neutral party in the role as a conduit of information between healthcare providers and patients and families. This position is also accountable for performing lead functions including guiding and training staff members.
Acts as a conduit of information for all clinical services including medical terminology and support services, policies and procedures to LEP patients.
Interprets patient and/or family questions or concerns to appropriate healthcare staff to optimize the patient care experience.
Documents accurately, completely and clearly all interpretation services.
Serves as a cultural mediator, as necessary and when appropriate, to enhance communication between patients/family, as it relates to medical care.
Assists management with directing the day-to-day workflow for the department, including coordinating staff schedules and monitoring daily staff levels to ensure adequate coverage is in place and service goals are met. This also includes training new team members, as well as guiding and acting as a resource to the department staff.
Identifies and assists management with implementing opportunities to enhance department processes and procedures. Coordinates the educational functions to ensure materials are current and accurate, and staff is trained accordingly.
Must posses a level of knowledge typically acquired through the completion of an associate's degree in communications or health care related field or equivalent experience.
Requires fluency in English and target language of interpretation and a proficiency level typically achieved with 1 year of experience as an interpreter. Requires an understanding of medical terminology. Must demonstrate effective communication skills, problem solving, strong human relations skills, organizational and time management skills and flexibility in responding to multiple demands. Must possess the ability to work cohesively in a team environment, as well as train and act as a mentor to peers.
Bachelors degree in communications or health care related field.
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
